subdivision of Tangail was established in 1870. It was turned into a district on December 1, 1969.
The district consists of 10
municipalities, 72 wards of these municipalities, 103 Union Porishods and 2431
villages.

Ghatail has One Municipality, Eleven Unions/Wards, Three hundreds and
ten Mauzas/Mahallas, and four hundreds and fifteen villages
The Kalihati thana was established in 1928 and was turned into an
upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of Two municipality, 13 union
parishads, 267 mouzas, 314 villages.
Nagarpur has 11 Unions/Wards, 212 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 250 villages.
Mirzapur has 13 Unions/Wards, 207 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 219 villages.
Gopalpur has 10 Unions/Wards, 162 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 146 villages.
